From rags to riches

by mccoydromintee

When it comes to the Champions elect Chelsea, nothing is ever simple. Between a manager who thinks he is the Messiah, players who seem intent on breaking limbs and a certain forward from the Ivory Coast who could easily be an Olympic diver, this is no ordinary club.

The one issue which seems to frustrate the average Joe more than anything else, is the amount they have spent on players since Roman Abramovich started pumping a seemingly endless supply of money into the club.

Over £200million has been spent since his arrival, and that’s just on player fees. As they stutter to two titles in a row, the feeling is they have bought the Premiership. It seems no player is too expensive for the Blues. Cech, Carvalho, Makelele, Drogba. From defence to attack the Londoners have been flash with the cash. Links with Shevchenko, Ronaldinho and Eto'o are common practice.

But look at their team. Arguably their two most influential players, Lampard and Terry, are not part of the spending spree. Many others have been there for the long haul. Also is it justifiable for Liverpool or Manchester United to discredit their title wins if they themselves have an endless supply of money when compared with the likes of Sunderland and West Brom? Wigan are getting all the plaudits in the top division this year, but they too have their own Abramovich style fund-raiser in Dave Whelan.

However what is the point in the top clubs trying to sign big players when they know Chelsea can simply keep raising the price? Shaun Wright-Phillips is the perfect example. He would have flourished at Liverpool or Arsenal. Instead he was sold to the highest bidder and has spent a year on the bench, praying for Carling Cup fixtures.

So overall what do I really think? Well, I think that all the big clubs flex their financial muscle and it is leading to the appearance of some the world’s finest players in the Premiership. However measures have to be taken. Perhaps a cap on the number of players you can sign per window would stop Chelsea buying their rivals targets. Something has to be done to stop the Premiership turning into a one horse race.
