It's not right, but it's OK
Rihanna - SOS
by Neale
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong…
But…
Oh God, I think I like it!
Yes, this is what went through my mind when I first heard this song. And to be quite honest, I’m still not too sure about it.
For starters, it uses Soft Cell’s Tainted Love as a backing. A song that I would quite happily sing loudly too. (Although, I’ve also been known to sing loudly to James Blunt’s Wisemen when I’m driving.) So that was a plus point. Also, I like the bootleg of Tainted Love vs Beyonce’s Work It Out, so I have no problem with hippity hop people taking it and adding their own vocals.
Ah, but the vocals. Hmm… They’re a bit of a nothing really. It does grow on me every time I listen to it, but still, “SOS, please someone help me”, meh. Doesn’t really interest me in the slightest.
So why the heck do I keep listening to it?
I’ve just downloaded the instrumental version of it, and now I can answer that question. It’s the funky re-doing of Tainted Love that I like. In all honesty, it would probably be better if someone put Soft Cell’s vocals back over the top of it.
Hmm… Now that gives me an idea…
