"Broccoli and a mini-cam"

Harry Hill's TV Burp (ITV1 – Saturdays, Sometime after 5pm)

Whenever I sit down to write a review for the TV section, I’m never quite sure how the hell it’s going to end up. If there’s been an ‘event’ programme on (i.e. something special like the Christmas Doctor Who episode) or the start of a new series, then I can usually find things to write about.

But if, like this week, there’s nothing new on and nothing particularly interesting I want to talk about, it gets to be a bit of a struggle. (I mean, I reviewed Hotel Babylon for godsake.)

Now imagine trying to make a TV programme using the best (and worst) bits of the week’s TV, but at the same time making it laugh-out-loud funny.

Well, that’s exactly what Harry Hill and his team do.

Pushed away at varying times on a Saturday afternoon is TV Burp. A gem of a programme that actually started out sometime after 10pm a few years back. Now, Harry Hill isn’t to everyone’s tastes, but I find him hilarious, especially in this. He (and his researchers) have a keen eye, spotting comedy in places you wouldn’t think to look.

Plus, anyone who can make the Emmerdale title screen funny using only broccoli and a mini-cam is alright in my book.

The best thing is spotting a funny moment yourself and then seeing it on the show. This happened to me a couple of weeks when I was flicking channels and heard Peggy Mitchell on Eastenders say “And that’s why tomorrow you’ll be unclogging my u-bend.” Picking out random lines like that is what Harry does best, and sure enough, that one was included.

This show would be ideal at primetime on a Saturday night, but, as Harry would say “What are the chances of that happening?”

The world of Ramsey Street

Wow. That’s all I can say. What a massive few weeks on Neighbours. And I’m not just talking about the new title screen…

Lesse… Katya came back, Susan got married to Alex…who then died, Dylan and Stingray were let out of prison and now Harold is trying to kill Paul!

And people wonder why I love this show.

Legend of the week

Harold Bishop:

For trying to kill Paul. You beast Harold, you utter beast!

Tosser of the week

Katya Kinski:

I just really don’t like her for some reason. Maybe it’s because she reminds me of Serena…

Dishonourable mention

Whichever writer decided to let Paul live – OK, so maybe Harold killing Paul is a tad far-fetched, but now he’s attempted it you might as well have gone the whole hog!
